Purpose Through Pain

Mark Walsham · Men's Mental Health · Speaker

“Every mistake in my life was never a mistake.
It was always leading me here.”

Mark and family

From Rock Bottom to Purpose

My name is Mark Walsham. I grew up in rural New Zealand — a place where you didn't talk about what was going on inside. You just got on with it. Until you couldn't anymore.

A drink driving accident that left my best friend catastrophically injured. Prison. Addiction. Years of running from the pain I'd caused. Depression so heavy I couldn't see a way forward. Suicidal ideation that brought me to my knees.

“I wasn't broken. I was being rebuilt — I just didn't know it yet.”

Today I'm a father of three, based in Albury, NSW. Fatherhood and the willingness to do deep, honest personal work didn't just save me — they gave me a reason to stand in rooms and tell the truth. To help other men find their way through.

Purpose Through Pain isn't a brand. It's what happened when I stopped running.

Mark's StoryBook Mark as a Speaker

Speaking Topics

Raw, real, and without a script. Mark speaks from lived experience — the kind that cuts through walls and opens conversations that have been locked for years.

01
The Drink Driving Keynote

A first-person account of the night that changed everything — and what accountability, consequence, and rebuilding actually look like. Perfect for road safety events, schools, and corporate programs.

02
Men's Mental Health

Why men suffer in silence — and what happens when they finally don't. Mark dismantles the walls we build and shows a path through that doesn't require losing everything first.

03
From Prison to Purpose

Incarceration, shame, and the slow, hard work of becoming someone you're proud of. A story of radical accountability that resonates far beyond the prison walls.

04
Addiction & Resilience

The science, the reality, and the recovery. What addiction actually looks like from the inside — and the decision points that change everything. Honest, unsettling, hopeful.

05
School Programs

Age-appropriate, powerful presentations for secondary students covering drink driving, mental health, peer pressure, and the real-world consequences of split-second decisions.

06
Workplace Presentations

Keynotes (45–60 min) and half-day workshops for businesses, trades, corporates, mining and construction, and community organisations. Mental health awareness, practical resilience tools, and psychological safety — woven into one honest conversation.

07
Sporting Club Presentations

Tailored sessions for junior and senior clubs across all codes — including the Ovens & Murray region. Breaking down the mask of toughness and building club cultures where men and boys can speak up and support each other.

Everything I Do Is For Them

Three kids changed the trajectory of my life in ways I still don't have the words for. When you become a father — really become one, not just biologically — it rewires something in you.

I couldn't ask my kids to be brave, to face hard things, to tell the truth — while I was still hiding from mine. Fatherhood called me to a level of honesty and courage I'd been avoiding my whole life.

“They didn't just give me a reason to live. They gave me a reason to grow.”

Every stage I stand on, every room I walk into, every man I coach — I carry them with me.

3,406km. $5,000+ Raised. We Didn't Stop.

✓ Campaign Complete

In 2024, 2,529 Australian males were lost to suicide, based on Australian Bureau of Statistics data. Mark set out — with the community behind him — to run 2,529km in their honour. Together, they didn't just get there. They ran straight past it.

The #StopTheRunning campaign — in support of the Black Dog Institute — finished on 27 June 2026 at the Finish Line Event, where Mark personally ran 100km in 12 hours. Every kilometre started a conversation — and reminded men they don't have to carry it alone.

“Purpose Through Pain is what happened when I stopped running. This is me helping others stop too.”

The Gathering

Purpose Through Pain presents a night and a morning on the Murray — a small group of men, a fire, and the space to be honest. No fixing, no performing. Just real conversation, brotherhood, and time away from the noise to face what you've been holding.

The Gathering runs bimonthly — with the goal of heavily subsidising future events as sponsorship and grant funding comes in, so cost is never the reason a man stays home.

“A space where men can finally put down what they've been carrying alone.”

Men's Circle

Where The Gathering is an event, the Circle is a practice. The Men's Circle is the ongoing heartbeat of Purpose Through Pain — a regular, in-person gathering of Albury men committed to showing up, being honest, and holding each other accountable between Gatherings.

Connection is not a one-time event. It requires repetition, trust, and time. The Men's Circle is where that trust is built.

  • Regular in-person meetups in the Albury region
  • Facilitated conversation — no agendas, no PowerPoints, no performance
  • A consistent group of men who know each other's names and stories
  • A space where “How are you really?” is asked — and answered honestly

For men who've been to The Gathering and want to continue. For men who aren't ready for The Gathering but want to start somewhere. For men who simply want to be part of something real.
